advertising... runs in the fam
apparently she was appearing in ads long before i was writing them.
my grandma "nan" had a photo shoot for a newspaper ad promoting ohio power ( circa 1960. )
the concept behind this print: she's writing a letter to her mother detailing how swell life is with electric appliances. the other half of this spread features her actual mother reading the letter. it gave both of their actual addresses. they were four streets apart.
these were the days before forms of consent, talent fees and retouching artists. simple concept. simple photo. simple ad.

simple skirt
love this american apparel tulip skirt in red. especially the pockets. can't wait to wear.
i heart my new camera
yay! my d40 arrived today! i spent the whole evening playing around. here's some of the very first images from nik (yep. i named it.) i'm sure they're horrible, but i'm excited to get better!

*microsite monday*

no grapes. no nuts.
pretty cool and creative microsite from post grape-nuts cereal. didn't you ever wonder why it doesn't have grapes or nuts in it? fine. just check it out anyway. pretty sure this guy ad-libbed his entire shoot. also, features the best method i've ever seen for getting rid of the "skip intro" button.

that old hollywood style

i love everything about this picture of my grandma (nan - on the right). she was so classy and always always up on the latest styles. i am guessing this picture was taken circa 1960. it appears they're outside of a china shop during one of her many travels. so elegant. so beautiful. this picture captures what i missed out on of her life, but can imagine how wonderful it was.

shiny new spot
from wieden + kennedy (amsterdam). they've arranged a massive amount of hondas to create headlight animation. pretty creative and definitely something you don't see every day. the spot is specifically promoting the insight hybrid. read more in this article from adweek.
also, check out the making of let it shine.

*sweet*

last night, while making din, the bf surprised me with these gorgeous pink flowers and a bottle of red wine. still trying to find out exactly what kind of flowers they are. both were from northmarket. yay.
{ mystery flowers uncovered... they are ranunculus — thanks, hillary! }

organization = relief

mmkay... so "peter walsh" did not help me but... last night, around 7 pm i thought it would be a fabulous idea to clean out every closet in my apartment. (granted it is tiny so that consisted of only three, but three crammed-to-the-max spaces!) one was so ridiculous that after the re-org, i gained a tiny sitting room. (almost) i am getting rid of mounds of "stuff." and.. i have way too many jeans for one person with only two legs. (yes, if i had 4 -6 extra legs, all them would make total sense.) but i can't help it. some people desire shoes, infomercial as-seen-on-tv products or cat paintings (... i'm sure those people are out there. i hope i never meet them.) i... heart... jeans. but i did manage to part with some of them.
point being, after my spring cleaning escapade i felt like a weight had been lifted! (a 100 pound denim weight.) it was marvelous. and i honestly think i slept better last night. more breathing space?
happy spring cleaning!
(just do it. you'll feel better)

*to you, from you*
between working your butt off, taking care of the poochy, securing gym time, working at home after work, family obligations, hanging with the bf and mingling with friends... don't forget to pencil in time for yourself!

tonight, after a working day i met the fam for dinner in german village, then planned to hit the pavement downtown with the wanna-be-irish for st. patty's day. but after a second thought, decided to stay at home. pour a glass of wine, sit on the porch and write a little — followed by a nice bubble bath to clear my head. then maybe walk down to jeni's for some ice cream. all in all, a pretty good plan. plus, sometimes it's nice to spend some quality time alone. it lets you re-focus on the direction you need to be moving next. taking more chances in my writing, for example, is a bold new goal i have set at work. a healthier diet and a regular gym schedule — two more things i'd like to check of the listy. time to re-focus.
so do something nice for you today.
xoxo

happy st. patty's day!
last year at this time, i was in chicago. this year i'll be on a patio in unseasonably warm 70 degree ohio weather! top of the mornin' to ya

vino vino = yumyum

we both decided to go with the "restaurant week" special: pistachio crusted chicken paired with la posta, malbec red wine. ( was apparently made from thirty-two year old vines tended by an elderly man named "angel") then chocolate creme brûlée' for a delicious dessert! a m a z i n g. and a nice intimate (but not too intimate atmosphere.) highly recommend it. vino vino = yum yum.
granted we had a tiny issue with parking (running over two curbs, etc)... (i was not driving, for the record)... but it was totally worth it.
i want to like you, jimmy fallon
after din, bf and i stuck to "the plan" for a low key evening. this means he watches eastbound and down (and re-quotes his favorite lines)... and i fall asleep. (oops) never fear... i woke up in time to watch jimmy fallon be possibly the most unfunny human to wear a snuggy in the history of the world. sigh. i guess we didn't like conan or jay for about a year... i just don't know if i can take the obvious pain of fail. maybe it's his writers (the delivery is a given fail). i want to like him, i really do! but i don't... yet.

*friday night date* xoxo

going to check out Vino Vino for din tonight. partaking in the columbus restaurant week. i'll let you know how tasty it is! {there is wine. it will be good} and after this day... i'll need it! lots of concentrating, lots of writing, lots of meetings... etc.
but the weekend has official begun! and now i am happier than a pigeon with a french fry. i love love love the weekends!
(p.s. is it lame that i still think getting "asked out on a date" by my boyfriend is extra sweet? sigh.)

*love letters*

My Suburban Girl
I know a sweet suburban girl,
She's witty, bright and brief;
With dimples in her cheeks; and pearl
In rubies set, for teeth.
Beneath her glossy raven hair
There beams the hazel eye,
Bright as the star of evening there
Where the yellow sunbeams die.
Her breath is like a flower blown,
In fragrance and perfume;
Her voice seems from the blissful throne
Where their harps the angels tune.
Her waist is just a trifle more
Than a cubit in its girth;
But when there my arms I throw,
I've all there is of earth.
And when she turns her dimpled cheek
Toward me for a kiss,
I lose expression—cannot speak—
And take all there is of bliss.
~ Samuel Alfred Beadle
a very sweet poem that i was lucky enough to have "re-written" for me. i love hand written notes. there is something so romantic about them — in the day of email, txting, tweeting, im-ing... just a plain piece of notebook paper with words hand written in pen. this is by far the best love letter t have ever received... if not the only.
hope you like it as much as i do!

me vs. the pretty shiny anthropology doorknob: round 1

i have been defeated by this lovely crystal doorknob*. i finally broke down and bought it. "pretty shiny doorknob, you will be mine!" and when it was... it dominated me. on the floor... in the bathroom with my little blue screwdriver — pounding, prying, banging (the inside of a doorknob is greasy and oily, p.s.) and i apparently i thought the inner-workings of a doorknob was some sort of magic, that only required two knobs and that insanely long screw holding them together.
after round one, there is a hole in my bathroom door, that the new knob is balancing on. sigh.
*that i had been talking myself out of buying for a month. you can get yours here.

*just watched*

vicky christina barcelona. a fascinating woody allen film that makes you realize... simply knowing what you don't want is perhaps more important than knowing what you do want. can only unfulfilled love be romantic?
